About Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne

Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, or IPFW for short, is a large university located in Fort Wayne, which is the county seat of Allen County, situated in the US state of Indiana, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 250 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census, fact which makes it the 2nd largest city in the state, after Indianapolis, and the 73rd largest city in the nation. Fort Wayne is also the principal city of the Fort Wayne Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a more than 400 000 people living within its limits.

IPFW’s history is traced back in 1917, when Indiana University began to offer classes in downtown Fort Wayne, to a number of 142 students. In a separate location (1941), Purdue University permanently established the Purdue Center, in order to provide a site in Fort Wayne for students, so they can begin their undergraduate studies, before transferring to the West Lafayette main campus to complete their degrees. Indiana University and Purdue University began to merge in 1958, and on September 17, 1964, Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne opened, followed by 2 years of construction, which began on October 18, 1962.

Since 1968, IPFW has granted nearly 8500 master’s degrees, more than 19 000 associate degrees, 25 000 bachelor’s degrees, as well as nearly 2000 certificates, producing more than 43 000 alumni, living worldwide. The university is academically organized into 4 colleges, 2 schools and 3 divisions, through which it grants its students various degrees in many fields of study. Since 1969, IPFW has been continuously accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, also being accredited by The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, American Chemical Society, American Dental Association, National Association of Schools of Music, National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and NCATE.

The athletic teams from IPFW are known as the IPFW Mastodons, who compete in the Summit League and in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, in 16 men’s and women’s sports, including baseball, basketball, golf, soccer, cross country, softball and volleyball. The Mastodons have gained national attention, repeatedly, in men’s volleyball, having several appearances in the NCAA Final Four tournaments.
